BLACK BALLOON DAY

Annual Black Balloon Day, held on March 6 each year brings awareness to the lives lost to overdose in the United States and all over the world. Communities everywhere will be hosting special events. Black balloons serve as the symbol for the day representing and commemorating the lives lost to overdose death in each community.

Overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Last year, the US surpassed 109,000 overdose deaths, the highest number to date. Nationally, experts blame fentanyl for the sharp rise in overdose. More people have died from fentanyl overdose than COVID-19, car accidents and suicides making the human cost of the opioid epidemic staggering. Though any drugs can contribute to overdose death, opioid drugs are responsible for most.

In 2022, there were 289 reported overdoses in Steuben County, NY, up from 264 in 2021.  Twelve lives were lost to overdose death. Most overdoses in Steuben County were because of heroin use with fentanyl overdose being the second highest contributor.

The Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid Committee is raising awareness and reminding people that the twelve residents of Steuben County who died from overdose in 2022 were more than numbers. They were fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. If someone you love is suffering from Opioid Use Disorder or addiction of any kind, please use the resource list below to reach out for help.

PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE AND ALCOHOL-RELATED INJURIES
Considered a crisis situation in the United States, excessive drinking and binge drinking are problems that require serious attention. The detrimental effect it has on public safety is more than worthy of all the effort necessary to not only reduce it but eradicate it. More significant are the innocent lives that are impacted. This devastating impact ranges from financial cost, physical injuries and rehabilitation, and many times, fatalities.  To learn more, checkout the infographic below created by University of Illinois at Chicago’s Online Master of Science in Health Informatics degree program.

Community Perception Surveys
The Opioid Committee of the Steuben Prevention Coalition conducts a Community Perception Survey to learn more about how Steuben County residents view opioid and other drug use and misuse.  The results of these surveys are used to steer the efforts of the Opioid Committee and provide data for future funding opportunities.

REMINDER: the 2021 Survey will be closing soon! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M6DD6WM
